Description
Vibrant cherry blossoms bloom at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in historic Newark, New Jersey, home to Newark Liberty International Airport and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. First settled in 1666 by Connecticut Puritans, Newark was named for the "New Ark of the Covenant" as a result of their religious ties. After declining in the 1960s and experiencing a revitalization in the 1990s, Newark remains a vital center of industry for the state of New Jersey. The Newark Cherry Blossom Festival is the largest in the northeast, rivaled in size and tourism only by the festival in Washington DC. The festival dates back to the 1920s and was begun by Bamberger's department stores co-founder Caroline Bamberger Fuld who donated thousands of trees to the city of Newark.
